Refining the Craft: Advanced Precision Rifle Training in Cheyenne

This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to co-instruct an Advanced Precision Rifle class alongside Phil Velayo right here in Cheyenne, WY. It was a week full of learning, refining, and pushing the limits of what we know — not just for the students, but for me as an instructor as well.

This class was designed for shooters who are serious about mastering the craft of precision rifle disciplines. We dove deep into the fundamentals, focusing not just on performing them, but executing them under stress — because that’s where they truly matter in competiton or hunting (for example). We worked on understanding ballistic data, trueing information through tools like Hornady 4DOF and Applied Ballistics, and sharpening preparation for PRS and NRL Hunter matches.
We also spent time on positional shooting, mental prep for stages, and finding the most efficient path to success when time and pressure are on the line. Gear management — often one of the most overlooked and toughest parts of this sport — was another major focus. I introduced the Barrel Burner app to the class, and told them that once this launches for the public, it will give everyone a streamlined way to track rifle maintenance without having to rely on notebooks, whiteboards, or the random notes section in their phones.
One thing I always remind myself: just because you’re the instructor doesn’t mean you have it all figured out. I learned just as much from the class — through their great questions, theories, and the practical scenarios we worked through together.
Thank you to everyone who came out and put in the hard work. Your dedication, energy, and hunger to get better made this class something really special.
Until next time — keep burning those barrels!
